3rd Future Internet Usage Areas Workshop 28-29 June in Brussels

More than 100 stakeholders from all sectors using, and planning to use, the services and facilities of Future Internet have gathered to build an extended Future Internet community in Europe.  The 3rd Future Internet workshop focuses on Usage Areas requirements and in particular how they can be part of the bigger picture of Future Internet evolution. The workshop strengthens the commitment of participating institutions, the Commission and other stakeholders to the FI-PPP concept. To set an ambiguous goal for us all, there is an immediate need for increased cooperation between technology development, business creation and customer participation in Europe. We need the vision, effort and implementation from both large companies and SMEs.

Cooperation is needed to find totally new and innovative ways to use the Internet. Mrs. Megan Richards highlights that the Internet is already a tool in work, learning, and in our daily lives – much wider usage can nevertheless be discovered. According to Mrs. Petra Turkama, FI-PPP is now fully running and targeting to challenge the existing usage and architecture of the Internet. In this framework FI-PPP plans to combine a large set of technologies for a single and shared business-oriented purpose.

One of the topics of the workshop is thus to discuss concrete measures to increase the interoperability of existing technologies – bring together open architectures, ambiguous business models, growing number of partners and better quality of research instruments.

Interestingly, Mr. David Kennedy, who speaks about the objectives and challenges of Future Internet, comes to a conclusion that we need to rationalise and rethink the amount of conferences on ICT – more efficient would be to have few key summits with an objective to have deeper, more analytic and more challenging discussions.

Topics also in discussion: open ecosystem, communication inside and outside FI-PPP, core platform requirements, generic and specific enablers, user-driven service and product development, future business models, data protection and customers, and next FI-PPP use-case calls.
